Hello babes! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend! The hubby and I went to Connecticut to spend the weekend with his family and it was a nice time to recharge and separate our mind and attention from social media. When your trying to build a business or brand social media plays a huge part in your daily life but it can be exhausting and toxic.
According to comScore's 2017 Cross Platform Future in Focus report, the average American adult (18+) spends 2 hours, 51 minutes on their smartphone every day. According to a TechCrunch article, US users are spending more than half their time (51%) in social media, messaging and media applications. I have to admit I can spend this amount of time on my social media applications in one day. It consumes you and you always find yourself scrolling more, liking another photo, leaving another comment and watching endless amounts of Instagram stories and then jumping on Pinterest or Snapchat for more browsing/scrolling. Its never ending and you have to give yourself a mental break and be present. I am working on finding balance and being present when I am out with my husband or family.
I want to provide you guys with tips to cleanse yourself and experience a social media detox!
1.) Don't take your phone to bed! This is a big one. I find when I take my phone to bed I end up spending about an hour on it and go to bed later than what I intended. Its best to plug it in and leave it charging. Don't even think that "Oh I am just going to look really quick" because girl it aint happening okay!
2.) Purge your social media following number. This is something that I am in the process of doing. The more people I am following the more appears on my feed and continue to scroll. Take the time to go through your list and unfollow accounts that are uninspiring and useless to your space and creativity.
3.) Turn off your notification alerts. This is a big one because those little notifications alerts are temptations to pick up your phone and hop on that social media app. If your turning to take some time off social media and your phone than this step is necessary. Your not going to miss anything and start to train your mind to think that way.
4.) Delete all apps. This can be done in extreme cases and some need it. If this is you then just do it. Delete the apps and set your mind free and enjoy all your new extra free time.
After doing most of these steps this weekend I received a much needed reminder to - BE PRESENT. My mind was relaxed, my thoughts were jumbled and I had time to read a book or meditate. I enjoyed great conversation and engaged in adult stimulation. When we returned on Sunday I felt energized and ready to start my week off fresh and positive.
Like all things in life balance is key and I hope to continue these steps to enjoy life and set boundaries to my social media interaction. I am thinking of performing an experiment and doing a social media detox test and documenting my experience for you guys. I haven't picked an amount of days yet but if you have any suggestions please let me know.
So on that note do you guys have a social media addiction like me :) If you do please share your thoughts and let me know if you have underwent a social media detox and what your experience was like.
